Although the card does not require a banking account to be opened, it does require payments in advance, which are then used to offset future purchases made with the card.

The Citi® mtvU™ Platinum Select® Visa® Card for College Students, issued by Citibank, is a credit card designed specifically for students and offers a unique reward program that awards students for using credit wisely and for receiving good grades.
Through the reward program, cardholders earn one point for general purchases and five points for every dollar spent at restaurants, bookstores, record stores, movie theaters, and video rentals. Students who use this card correctly by staying within their credit limit and paying on time will receive 100 bonus points per billing period and a potential reduction of their interest rate.
