Getting Your Credit Limit Increased

Helpful Hints & Tips for Getting Your Ideal Credit Limit

If you’ve just applied for your first credit card and don’t have much of a credit history, the credit card company will probably give you a low limit. Five hundred dollars is common. A limit that low isn’t really enough to cover the sorts of emergency expenses for which a credit card is so useful. A car repair can easily cost much more than that. So how do you go about getting your limit increased? It’s not terribly difficult.

Perhaps the best way to increase your limit is to use it responsibly. As you pay for things with your card and then pay your credit card bill in a timely manner, you will build a good credit history. Eventually, your credit card issuer will start to increase your limit. Before you know it, you’ll have a limit that is several times your initial $500 limit. While you may have a much higher limit, be careful about how you use it. Don’t spend more than you can afford, or you could find yourself in a situation that hurts you credit rating.

Sometimes you may need to ask for a credit limit increase before the credit card issuer increases your limit. In this case, you’ll have to call the issuer and ask for a limit increase. They use several factors to determine whether to grant you a limit increase: your credit history, your income, and perhaps your assets. If you’ve got poor credit, they may decline to increase your limit. Similarly, if you have no income, or assets, they’re unlikely to approve a limit increase. Most issuers won’t tell you over the phone why they’ve declined to increase your limit, but they will send you a letter stating the reason.

Don’t request credit limit increased just because you want a higher limit. Only do it if you need it. The amount credit you’ve already been extended (i.e. your credit limit) can affect your ability to obtain new lines of credit, like a car loan. However, if you do need a higher limit on your credit card, don’t hesitate to ask for it.
